History


The Ministry of Tourism and Heritage was established in 2020, in accordance with the power given to the Honorable President of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar in accordance with Article 42 (1) of the Constitution of 1984, and entrusted with the responsibilities of managing and developing the Tourism and Antiquities Sectors Ancient.

The Ministry of Tourism and Heritage has been established due to its similar and interdependent activities. Thus, putting those activities in one Ministry will help achieve efficiency, push the pace of development and strengthen the economy.

The Ministry covers two (2) main Sectors of Tourism and Heritage. The Tourism Industry consists of the Tourism Commission and the Department of Tourism. These institutions have been entrusted with the responsibility of planning, managing, developing Tourism and promoting Zanzibar as a tourism destination to go along with policies, strategies and the National Vision in achieving the main goals of strengthening the economy and reducing poverty.

In terms of Antiquities, the Sector is made up of the Department of Museums and Antiquities. This industry has been entrusted with the responsibility of preserving, strengthening and taking care of ancient and historical places and objects so that they help in strengthening the economy and preserving history for future generations.
