Dunga Palace was built for Muhammad bin Ahmed al Alawi (c.1785-1865), sometimes called Sultan Hamadi (Lyne, 1905), the last but one of a long line of traditional leaders of Unguja claiming Shirazian descent who were given the title of Mwinyi Mkuu (meaning the ‘Great Holder’ or ‘Great Possessor’), from a line possibly going back as far as the 13th century
